Entry from: Las Vegas, United States Entry Title: "Back in the USA" Entry: "4 relaxing days in Los Angeles was a welcome way to start the USA leg of our trip. I managed to get a good upgrade rate with the rental car company to secure a Ford Mustang convertible - an excellent machine. For the 4 days we stayed at the home of my 2nd cousin in Redondo Beach - very well fed and looked after and in return we managed to teach June how to use and upload pictures on her new digital camera. Also met her daughter and and son-in-law from Vegas which gave a good family feel to proceedings. We have both been to LA before but still took time to head up to Santa Monica for a great sunset, wonder at the sheer amount of money in Beverly Hills and Rodeo Drive and take in the tacky but energizing Hollywood. A trip to Long Beach to see the Queen Mary ship was also slotted in. The use of the motor car in California and particularly gas guzzling SUVs shows no sign of abating, although small car sales for fuel efficient vehicles are on the up and hitting companies like Ford and GM very hard. But the 8 lane freeways around the city are still very busy even off peak and the cloud of smog over the city is very evident particularly when coming into land at the airport.
